VPG Mobility Vehicle Features Compressed Natural Gas Option

Vehicle Production Group unveiled its purpose-built Standard Taxi several years ago at the New York International Auto Show. Now, a more refined and definitely better looking version, the MV-1 (for Mobility Vehicle-1), will go into production in October 2010 as a 2011 model.
VPG is targeting the MV-1 at the paratransit market. The company says the MV-1 is the first and only vehicle built from the ground up in the U.S. to meet or exceed Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) vehicle guidelines. Unlike other wheelchair-accessible vehicles, this is not a conversion or aftermarket retrofit. The MV-1 will also be offered for taxi, livery, shuttle bus, and personal transportation duty. All versions will be fully ADA capable.
Powering the MV-1 is a Ford 4.6-liter EFI V-8 engine mated to a Ford 4R75E electronic 4-speed automatic transmission, with this powerplant available in either gasoline or dedicated compressed natural gas versions. The ‘Green Option’ CNG variant has a range of about 290 miles with natural gas supplied from three lightweight, rear-mounted Type III tanks. With the exception of Honda’s Civic GX, the MV-1 will be the only factory-built light-duty natural gas vehicle offered in the U.S.
The MV-1 features an extra-wide door with a ramp located within the floor, a setup that doesn’t take up any interior space and allows a shallow ramp slope. A manually operated ramp is standard on MV-1s with a powered telescoping ramp optional. The 56-inch high and 36-inch wide rear doors allow easy access for even the largest power wheelchair or scooter. The ramp has a 1200 pound capacity. The MV-1 can accommodate five passengers plus the driver, including up to two forward facing wheelchair riders. One wheelchair occupant can sit next to the driver facing either forward or rearward.
Featuring body-on-frame construction, the MV-1 features rear-wheel-drive with four-wheel disc brakes, independent suspension, and a self-leveling air system. Electronic stability control and anti-lock brakes complete the package.
AM General – which designs and produces the military HUMVEE and assembles the HUMMER H2 – will produce the MV-1 for VPG at its state-of-the-art facility in Mishawaka, Indiana. The 2011 MV-1 will start at about $40,000.
